What is Sade Sati?

“Sade Sati” means seven and a half. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross each sign, so its passage through the three signs centred on your natal Moon lasts about seven and a half years. Tradition describes three phases — rising, peak and setting — and associates the period with responsibility, effort and maturity. Because of Saturn's retrograde motion, the start and end of each phase can stretch over several back-and-forth ingresses, which this calculator lists in full.

Shani Dhaiya (small panoti) refers to Saturn's transit through the 4th or 8th sign from the Moon, each lasting about two and a half years.

Traditional texts also describe Sade Sati as a time of growth and discipline, and its effects are said to depend on the whole chart. Nothing on this page predicts specific events. Read more in our Sade Sati guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sade Sati calculated from the Moon sign or the Sun sign?

From the natal Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) in the sidereal zodiac. That is why you need your birth date, time and place rather than your Western sun sign.

How many times does Sade Sati happen in a lifetime?

Saturn completes a circuit of the zodiac in about 29.5 years, so most people experience Sade Sati two or three times.
