How Vimshottari Dasha works

The system assigns a 120-year cycle to the nine grahas in a fixed order: Ketu (7), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), Mercury (17). Your first Mahadasha is ruled by the lord of your birth nakshatra. How far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra at birth decides how much of the first period remains — the balance of dasha.

Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods) in the same order, beginning with the Mahadasha lord itself, and each Antardasha into nine Pratyantardashas. The length of each sub-period is proportional to its lord’s share of 120 years. Read more in our Vimshottari Dasha guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which year length do you use?

We use a 365.25-day year, the most common convention in modern software. Some astrologers use a 360-day “savana” year, which shifts dates by a few days per year of dasha.

Why does my Dasha differ slightly from another website?

Small differences come from the ayanamsha, the year length, and the exact Moon position. A difference of a few days at the end of a long period is normal; large differences usually mean a different birth time or time zone.
