Choose the bride’s and groom’s birth stars (nakshatra) and padas to check the ten South Indian marriage agreements, from Dina to Vedha. You will see which are present, a score out of 10 and what each one means.
How 10 Porutham matching works
Porutham means agreement in Tamil. South Indian families traditionally check ten poruthams between the bride’s and groom’s birth stars (the Moon’s nakshatra at birth) and Moon signs (rasi). Most of the counts start from the bride’s star, counted as 1, and run forward to the groom’s star, so the direction matters: swapping the two stars can change the result.
Each porutham is graded Uttamam (good, 1 point), Madhyamam (average, ½ point) or Adhamam (not present, 0). Many families look for six or more out of ten, but the total is not the whole story: Rajju and Vedha are treated as the key agreements, and many will not proceed without them unless an astrologer finds balancing factors in the full charts.
The ten poruthams at a glance
- Dina: present when the groom’s star is the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 18th, 20th, 24th or 26th from the bride’s.
- Gana: the same temperament group is best; a Deva bride with a Manushya groom is also good, the reverse is average, and a Rakshasa star paired with a different group is not favoured.
- Mahendra: present when the groom’s star is the 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd or 25th from the bride’s.
- Stree Deergha: the groom’s star should be more than 13 stars ahead of the bride’s; 10 to 13 is accepted as average.
- Yoni: the star animals should not be one of the seven rival pairs, such as cat and rat or cow and tiger.
- Rasi: counting from the bride’s Moon sign, the groom’s should not be the 6th, 8th or 12th; the 2nd is accepted as average, and every other position, including the same sign, is good.
- Rasi Adhipati: the rulers of the two Moon signs should be the same planet or friendly; neutral is average.
- Vasya: one Moon sign should be on the other’s traditional list of attractions (Mesha: Simha, Vrishchika; Vrishabha: Karka, Tula; Mithuna: Kanya; Karka: Vrishchika, Dhanu; Simha: Tula; Kanya: Vrishabha, Meena; Tula: Kanya, Makara; Vrishchika: Karka; Dhanu: Meena; Makara: Mesha, Kumbha; Kumbha: Mesha; Meena: Makara).
- Rajju: the two stars should fall in different body groups (see the table below).
- Vedha: the two stars should not be an obstructing pair: Ashwini and Jyeshtha; Bharani and Anuradha; Krittika and Vishakha; Rohini and Swati; Ardra and Shravana; Punarvasu and Uttara Ashadha; Pushya and Purva Ashadha; Ashlesha and Mula; Magha and Revati; Purva Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada; Uttara Phalguni and Purva Bhadrapada; Hasta and Shatabhisha; Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta also obstruct one another.
Rajju groups
The 27 stars run up and down the body in groups of nine: feet, waist, navel, neck, head, then back down again. If both stars fall in the same group, tradition calls it Rajju dosha.
| Rajju | Birth stars |
|---|---|
| Siro (head) | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| Kantha (neck) | Rohini, Ardra, Hasta, Swati, Shravana, Shatabhisha |
| Nabhi (navel) | Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Kati (waist) | Bharani, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Pada (feet) | Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Revati |
Why the pada matters
Most stars sit entirely inside one Moon sign, but nine (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada) span two signs. For these, the pada (quarter) decides the rasi, which in turn affects Rasi, Rasi Adhipati and Vasya. If you are unsure of the pada, our nakshatra calculator finds it from birth details.
Porutham and Guna Milan
North Indian Ashtakoota (Guna Milan) and South Indian Porutham share several ideas, such as gana, yoni and the Moon-sign relationship, but they score them differently. If you have full birth details, the Kundli matching calculator gives the 36-guna view as well.
Frequently asked questions
How many poruthams are needed for marriage?
Many families look for at least six of the ten, with Rajju and Vedha both present. Tradition values which poruthams agree more than the bare count.
Which porutham is the most important?
Rajju is usually considered the most important, followed by Vedha. Dina, Gana and Yoni are also given good weight.
Does the order of the stars matter?
Yes. Most counts run from the bride’s star to the groom’s, so swapping the two can change Dina, Mahendra, Stree Deergha and Rasi.
Is porutham the same everywhere in South India?
The ten agreements are widely shared, but regional almanacs differ on details such as the Stree Deergha threshold and same-star cases. This calculator follows the most commonly published Tamil rules.
What if Rajju does not match?
Tradition gives Rajju dosha great weight, and families usually ask an astrologer to study both full charts for balancing factors before deciding.
