How the Navamsa is calculated
Each 30° sign is divided into nine navamsas of 3°20′. The sequence starts from a different sign depending on the element of the birth sign: fire signs begin from Aries, earth signs from Capricorn, air signs from Libra and water signs from Cancer. Equivalently, the 108 navamsas of the zodiac (27 nakshatras × 4 padas) cycle through the twelve signs nine times starting from Aries.
D1 vs D9
The D1 Rashi chart shows where planets are placed; the D9 is traditionally used to judge how well they can deliver their results. A planet in the same sign in both charts is called vargottama and is considered strengthened. Read our guide to the Navamsa chart for more.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Navamsa sensitive to birth time?
The Navamsa Lagna changes about every 13 minutes, because each navamsa is only 3°20′ wide. Planetary navamsas are stable, except for the fast-moving Moon.
What does vargottama mean?
A planet or Lagna that occupies the same sign in the D1 birth chart and the D9 Navamsa chart. Classical texts treat vargottama placements as strong.
