Why two Sun signs?
The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology starts from the spring equinox. The sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology is fixed to the stars. Because of the slow precession of the Earth’s axis, the two have drifted apart by about 24° (the ayanamsha), so most people’s Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier than their Western one.
In Vedic astrology the Sun sign matters less than the Moon sign (rashi) and the Lagna.
Frequently asked questions
Which Sun sign is correct?
Both are correct within their own system. Use the sidereal sign for Vedic astrology and the tropical sign for Western astrology.
Do I need my birth time?
Usually not — the Sun moves about one degree a day. A time helps only if you were born on a day when the Sun changed sign.
