How to read your Vedic birth chart

A Vedic birth chart (Janam Kundli or Rashi chart, also called D1) is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It differs from a Western horoscope in one important way: it uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars. Today the sidereal zodiac sits about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, so many people find their Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier than they expected.

The most important point in the chart is the Lagna, the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why an accurate birth time matters. In this calculator the Lagna sign becomes the first house, the next sign the second house, and so on — the traditional whole-sign house system.

North Indian vs South Indian chart

Both styles show the same information. In the North Indian diamond chart the houses are fixed — the top centre diamond is always the first house — and the small numbers show which sign occupies each house (1 = Aries, 12 = Pisces). In the South Indian grid the signs are fixed — Pisces is always top-left and the signs run clockwise — and the Lagna is marked with a diagonal line.

Abbreviations

Su Sun · Mo Moon · Ma Mars · Me Mercury · Ju Jupiter · Ve Venus · Sa Saturn · Ra Rahu · Ke Ketu · Asc Ascendant. A ℞ mark shows a planet that was retrograde at birth.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not know my exact birth time?

Planetary signs will usually still be correct, but the Lagna and house placements may change. The Lagna moves about one degree every four minutes, so even a 15-minute error can matter if your ascendant is near the edge of a sign.

Why is my Vedic Sun sign different from my Western sign?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which accounts for the precession of the equinoxes. The difference (the ayanamsha) is currently about 24°, so most people’s Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier than their Western one.

Which ayanamsha does this calculator use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard adopted by the Government of India’s Calendar Reform Committee and the most widely used ayanamsha. See our calculation method page for details.
