How the 36 gunas are scored
Ashtakoota (“eight factors”) compares the Moon of each partner. Each koota is worth more points than the one before, for a total of 36:
| Koota | Max | Based on | Traditionally indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Moon sign | Spiritual temperament |
| Vashya | 2 | Moon sign | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | Well-being and fortune |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra animal | Physical compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Moon-sign lords | Mental affinity and friendship |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | Temperament |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Moon-sign distance | Family welfare and prosperity |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | Health and progeny |
Traditionally, 18 or more gunas is the minimum for a recommended match. Read the complete guide to Ashtakoota matching for how each koota is calculated.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Guna Milan score?
Traditionally, below 18 is not recommended, 18–24 is average, 25–32 is good and 33–36 is excellent. Astrologers also weigh Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, Manglik Dosha and the full charts, so the score is only one part of the picture.
What is Nadi Dosha?
Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners’ Moon nakshatras belong to the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), giving 0 of 8 points. Classical texts list exceptions, such as the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, which this calculator reports.
Can I match Kundlis without birth time?
Guna Milan depends on the Moon’s nakshatra, which changes about once a day. Without a birth time the result may be wrong if the Moon changed nakshatra on that date, so an accurate time gives a more reliable score.
Why does my score differ from another website?
Traditions differ slightly in the Vashya, Gana and Yoni tables, and some calculators automatically apply dosha cancellations. We show the standard scores and list exceptions separately so you can see exactly why.
