In Vedic astrology “your sign” usually means your Rashi — the sign the Moon occupied at birth. It is used for horoscopes, Sade Sati, transits and marriage matching, and its nakshatra pada gives the traditional first letter for a name.

What is Rashi?
Rashi means “sign”. Your Janma Rashi or Chandra Rashi is the sidereal sign of the Moon at birth. Because the Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, you need the date, time and place of birth for a reliable answer — especially if the Moon was near the edge of a sign.
Name letters (Namakshar)
Each of the 108 nakshatra padas has a traditional syllable. At the naming ceremony (namkaran), many families choose a name beginning with the syllable of the Moon’s pada at birth. The calculator shows yours; every nakshatra page lists all four syllables.
The twelve Rashis
Aries (Mesha) Rashi — A Moon in Aries is described as emotionally quick and spirited — enthusiastic, independent and impatient, with feelings that flare up and pass quickly.
Taurus (Vrishabha) Rashi — The Moon is exalted in Taurus, so tradition regards this Rashi as emotionally stable — content, affectionate, fond of good food, music and security.
Gemini (Mithuna) Rashi — A Moon in Gemini is described as mentally restless and sociable — needing variety, conversation and learning to feel at ease.
Cancer (Karka) Rashi — The Moon rules Cancer, so this is considered a natural home for the mind: nurturing, intuitive and emotionally deep, with a long memory.
Leo (Simha) Rashi — A Moon in Leo is described as proud and warm-hearted — needing respect and appreciation, loyal and generous to those it loves.
Virgo (Kanya) Rashi — A Moon in Virgo is described as thoughtful and careful — finding calm in order and usefulness, sometimes prone to worry.
Libra (Tula) Rashi — A Moon in Libra is described as harmonious and relationship-oriented — seeking fairness, companionship and pleasant surroundings.
Scorpio (Vrishchika) Rashi — Classical texts treat the Moon as debilitated in Scorpio and describe this Rashi as emotionally intense, private and transformative.
Sagittarius (Dhanu) Rashi — A Moon in Sagittarius is described as cheerful and idealistic — needing freedom, meaning and a broad horizon.
Capricorn (Makara) Rashi — A Moon in Capricorn is described as reserved and dutiful — emotionally controlled, hard-working and focused on security and achievement.
Aquarius (Kumbha) Rashi — A Moon in Aquarius is described as detached yet kind — thoughtful, friendly to many and drawn to ideas and causes.
Pisces (Meena) Rashi — A Moon in Pisces is described as sensitive and empathetic — dreamy, devotional and easily moved by the feelings of others.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rashi the same as my zodiac sign?
Not usually. Western “star signs” are based on the Sun in the tropical zodiac. Rashi is based on the Moon in the sidereal zodiac, so for most people it is a different sign.
Can I find my Rashi from my name?
Some people work backwards from the first letter of their name, but that only works if the name was chosen by namakshar. The reliable way is to calculate from birth details.
