Jnana Vijnana Yoga

ज्ञानविज्ञानयोग — The Yoga of Knowledge and Realisation · 30 verses

Summary

Krishna describes his lower nature — earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego — and his higher nature, the life that sustains the world. Everything rests on him “like pearls on a thread”. He is the taste of water, the light of the sun and moon, and the strength of the strong. Four kinds of people worship him — the distressed, the seekers of knowledge, the seekers of wealth and the wise — and the wise, who see that “Vasudeva is all”, are very rare.

Key themes

  • Higher and lower nature
  • The divine as the thread of all things
  • Four kinds of devotees
  • “Vasudeva is all”

    dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo’smi bharatarṣabha ||

    matta eveti tānviddhi na tvahaṃ teṣu te mayi ||

  13. 7.13 · Krishna

    māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṃ bhāvamāśritāḥ ||

    Evildoers, the deluded and the lowest of people do not take refuge in me; their understanding is stolen by illusion and they cling to a demonic nature.

    priyo hi jñānino’tyarthamahaṃ sa ca mama priyaḥ ||

    आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ॥

    udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam |
    āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā māmevānuttamāṃ gatim ||

    All of these are noble, but the one who knows I regard as my very Self; for, with his self united in yoga, he is set on me alone as the highest goal.

  19. 7.19 · Krishna · key verse

    लभते च ततः कामान्मयैव विहितान्हि तान् ॥

    antavattu phalaṃ teṣāṃ tadbhavatyalpamedhasām |
    devāndevayajo yānti madbhaktā yānti māmapi ||

  24. 7.24 · Krishna

    अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिमापन्नं मन्यन्ते मामबुद्धयः ।
    परं भावमजानन्तो ममाव्ययमनुत्तमम् ॥

    paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mamāvyayamanuttamam ||

    The unwise think of me, the unmanifest, as having taken on a manifest form, not knowing my higher being, which is imperishable and supreme.

  25. 7.25 · Krishna

    नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः ।
    मूढोऽयं नाभिजानाति लोको मामजमव्ययम् ॥

    mūḍho’yaṃ nābhijānāti loko māmajamavyayam ||

    sarvabhūtāni saṃmohaṃ sarge yānti parantapa ||

    Through the delusion of the pairs of opposites, which arises from desire and aversion, all beings fall into bewilderment at birth, Bharata, scorcher of foes.

  28. 7.28 · Krishna

    येषां त्वन्तगतं पापं जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
    ते द्वन्द्वमोहनिर्मुक्ता भजन्ते मां दृढव्रताः ॥
