Step-by-step puja vidhi

  1. Sargi before sunrise

Eat the sargi given by the mother-in-law before dawn, then begin the fast — many observe it without water (nirjala).

  2. Prepare for the evening

Apply mehndi and dress in festive or bridal clothes. Arrange the puja thali and the karwa.

  3. Evening puja and katha

Women gather and worship Gauri, Shiva and Ganesha, then hear the Karwa Chauth katha, passing the thalis around the circle seven times (thali feri) while singing.

  4. Wait for the moon

Once the moon rises, look at it through the sieve with a diya alongside, then at your husband through the same sieve.

  5. Arghya to the moon

Offer water from the karwa to the moon and pray for the husband’s long life.

  6. Break the fast

Take the first sip of water and bite of sweet from your husband’s hand, then share a festive meal.

Tips

  • Pregnant women, the elderly and anyone with a health condition should consult a doctor and are traditionally exempt from a waterless fast.
  • Moonrise varies by city — check the Panchang for your location.
